J. Codec - A Construct Of My Psyche

A Construct Of My Psyche is my second minimal tech house set, recorded 28 December, 2008. It focuses on minimal house and techno but there's still a healthy dose of electro in there for flavor. J. Codec - Soundtracks To Fictitious Films

Soundtracks To Fictitious Films is a lot artsier than my usual mix, hence the snooty highbrow title. It's basically minimal techno, which is not my standard fare, but I dig it. I've been bootlegged

Since I've been coming up in posts lately I've taken to Googling myself periodically to maintain awareness of what is happening out there that has my name attached to it. Recently I found some interesting links:
Download DJ Codec Continuous Play MP3 Music - Buy DJ Codec (etc...)
The album they're offering for sale was a promotional-only-not-for-sale mix I created in 2002 (the sites incorrectly list the year as 2003) that was originally called "Continuous Play." That mix was later cleaned up, polished and became disc 1 of the "Hard Math" two-disc mix album. There are at least four sites offering this old album of mine for sale, though they appear to be reskins or renames of the same site.

Legally, that mix was released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License (see http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/ for more details). This license essentially means anyone has the right to freely share, copy, distribute and transmit the work, under the following restrictions:
  1. It must clearly be marked as my work, not someone else's (i.e. don't say its your DJ mix when it's not).
  2. You can't make any money off of it.
  3. You can't change, alter, transform, or build on it (no remixes without permission).
I wonder how I should feel about getting bootlegged. I recall exactly what I was thinking when I posted the mix in the first place so many years ago. My exact thoughts were "the more this album spreads the better" I wanted it to be shared and distributed as widely as possible, but for FREE, not for sale. Well, I guess I'm flattered that someone thinks they can make money off of what so many people already have for free.

So in the interest of fairness to all, please if someone tries to sell you that album, don't buy it. You're not supporting any of the musicians that contributed toward that album (J. Codec, Syphon, Anti or Red Hot). Just ask me for it. Soon enough the it'll be posted here and you can go get it for free anyway.

Peace.

J. Codec - Inside Your Soul reaches number 5

Q) Is it vain to Google yourself?

A) Well, it depends on what you find.

In a recent self-Googling I found a Bulgarian music forum where someone has been requesting the Tech House tune J. Codec - Inside Your Soul. Well, actually, they were asking if anyone had the MP3 to share. I wrote back, through a friend who can write in Bulgarian for me so I could dispel the myths about that song.

I also noticed that that tune is ranked at #5 most requested song on the Bulgarian Top Dance Hits charts and #5 on DJ Bobby D's chart (arguably the #1 Tech House DJ in Eastern Europe). In fact, there's a direct link to request it on Bobby D's radio station website. Alright!

Anyway, Here's the post

Hi. This is J. Codec. Sorry I can't write in Bulgarian (I'm from Hollywood). The song NooB requested in http://www.exclusivemusic.net/f/index.php?showtopic=3914 is my song, not "Nick Holder - Inside Your Soul". I'm flattered by your interest in my tune!

The song "Inside Your Soul" is an exclusive mix for DJ Bobby D. You can hear it from time to time on Traffic Radio (http://bobbyd.networx-bg.com/playlist.php?letter=J). It's a Tech House tune with a Breakbeat breakdown. I wrote with Ableton Live 6.0 and Reason 3.0.

If you want to contact me you can check out my MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/codecrecords or http://www.myspace.com/jcodec. I'll have a website up soon and you'll be able to download music from there. Until then just hang tight! Thanks again!

-J. Codec, Codec Records, Hollywood, CA, USA

The period of exclusivity has long-since expired. Expect the download link for this tune soon.

The History of Codec Reords

Codec Records is not an actual record label, not yet anyway. It's really more of a collection of like-minded producers and the music they have written individually and collaboratively over the last seven years. None of the music under the Codec Records label has ever been published on anything more formal than a limited edition test pressing.

That said, I'm certain that the authors of all of Codec Records tracks would be interested in fielding any inquiries about formal publication on an established record label. Execs, if you hear anything you like don't be afraid to let us know.

A brief history of Codec Records: Back in ancient history (that's generations ago in techno-time, or about nine years ago, in real-time) I used to promote medium-sized parties (typically 1000 to 5000 people, though sometimes as intimate as 300 and sometimes as massive as 20,000) in and around Southern Califormia. As a drum & bass DJ that had recently relocated to Los Angeles from Pittsburgh (Steel City Jungle represent!) I was relatively unknown in LA at the time, I was mostly interested in promoting to get myself booked. Frustrated with the trance-centric focus of the events LA tends to favor, J. Kidd and and I formed a splinter group of the party crew we promoted for (yes, we called them party crews back then) that would be focused entirely on promoting Drum & Bass events and called it Dragonbeats Entertainment.

Dragonbeats attracted the attention of two brilliant an up and coming drum & bass DJs and producers - DJ Anti and Syphon. Though their styles were very different from each other, I hit it off with each of them musically. Syphon and I recorded three tunes under the name Digital Physics before Syphon left California for adventures in another state. DJ Anti and I also recorded a handful of tunes together but an enormous amount of our early music that we recorded individually was heavily influenced by each other.

Eventually the sparkle of the LA party scene faded and I focused entirely on writing music. It seemed appropriate to abandon the Dragonbeats moniker since the group's intent had transformed to significantly. I rechristened the label in my own name: J. Codec (or alternately Code C, Codec, 'Dec and about a hundred other nicknames and spellings people have used over the years). I closed the old website, AIM and email addresses and laid that chapter to rest.

Musically, since the end of the Dragonbeats Era, I've changed too. I hit a brick wall with drum & bass because the genre simply stopped evolving. At right around the same time, electro house started catching my eye because of a lot of the energy, inspiration and innovation I saw in drum & bass ten years ago has migrated there. The net result is that I've diversified my musical horizons. I and my music is no longer strictly about drum & bass. Call it "D&B-Inspired Techno" - that is to say - house music for junglists.

The future of Codec Records: I need to design a new logo, create a new website, and make promo versions of all the new tunes written since the closure of Dragonbeats. When I get around to it, I'll post info here. Until then, take care.

Weclome to Codec Records Blog

Q) Who am I?
A) J. Codec a.k.a. DJ Codec a.k.a. Jason Codec a.k.a. Code C a.k.a. Code.C.
Really, all those spellings have been used in the past. It just depends on what the promoter feels like using on his or her flyer.

Q) What is this organization called?
A) Codec Records a.k.a. Code C Recordings.
This is a virtual record label the name isn't set in stone.

Q) What do I do?
A) I make beats. So do my friends.
We write tracks. We make mixes. We occasionally record live shows. Under our imprint you'll find House, Techno, Breaks, Drum & Bass and Dubstep under our banner. The one common theme is that it's all heavy-duty dancefloor oriented electronica.

Q) Why do you blog?
A) We'll post tracks and mixes here for you to download.
Additionally, I'm migrating the handful of blog entries from the Codec Records MySpace page to here for simplicity.

Q) Is that it?
A) Yep. Pretty much.
